Scroll scene: zoom

A picture shows only through the letters of one large word. As the page scrolls the section holds and the word grows until you have passed through it into the picture, and a caption arrives. The same on a phone. Needs the EtchPress Runtime; without it it is the word, the picture and the caption.

Before you copy

This is a showpiece. It pastes into Etch like any other item and it is complete without anything else, but its motion comes from the EtchPress runtime: a small script that loads only on the pages that use a showpiece.

Etch for WordPress: download the EtchPress Runtime plugin from Downloads in your account, install it and activate it. Paste your licence key under Settings, EtchPress Runtime, and it updates from the Plugins screen like any other plugin.

Etch Studio: download the EtchPress runtime files from Downloads in your account, unzip them and drop them into your project's Asset Manager, then paste the item. Studio ships the files it needs with your site.

What you can build with it

The opening of a campaign page. A one-word brand statement that becomes the product. The start of a case study. A chapter break on a long story page.

Props

word (one short word); image and alt; text (the caption); linkLabel (optional) and href

States shown

Scrolling through: the word grows from its centre, the cover fades, the picture is whole, the caption rises in; it can stop anywhere. A focused link scrolls the scene to its end. Reduced motion and no runtime: the word, the picture, the caption, one under the other.

How to change it

Content and options are 6 props in the component's settings panel. Colour, type, spacing and radius follow your Automatic.css settings, so a change to the site's palette or scale changes this too. For anything else, edit the classes in the Style Manager, starting with .scene-zoom. Its behaviour is a small script that travels with the component; no plugin and nothing to install.

ACSS tokens used

space-m, space-l, space-xl, text-l, radius, primary-dark, text-dark-muted; –header-height for the hold. Colours over the picture are literals.

ACSS requirements

ACSS 4 defaults. Needs the EtchPress Runtime, 0.5.0 or later: the EtchPress Runtime plugin on WordPress, or the runtime's files dropped into the project's Asset Manager in Etch Studio. Without it you get the still version.

Version history

Version 1.0.2, October 3, 2026: Back to the flight as first built: the word grows as one piece about its middle. The "Pass through" option is gone. The word's size still follows the width of the place it sits in. Needs the EtchPress Runtime 0.5.3. Version 1.0.1, October 2, 2026: The letters stay sharp at every size (the word grows by its font size), and a new option picks the point of the word you fly through. Sizes now follow the width of the place it sits in, not the screen, so it fits a narrow column on a wide screen. Version 1.0.0, October 1, 2026: First release, with the EtchPress Runtime 0.5.0.

Tested with

Etch 1.6.7 and ACSS 4.0.1. Version 1.0.2.

Needs the EtchPress runtime

The plugin on WordPress, or the runtime's files in Etch Studio. Without it you get the still version.
