What a good quote always includes

Three things to ask before you hire anyone, and the answers worth hearing.

By Dana Marlow4 min read

Most of the problems we are asked to fix started with a quote that left things out. It named a price, but not what the price covered, who would do the work, or when it would be done.

What still holds

A good quote answers three questions before any work starts: what the price includes, who will do the work, and when it will be finished. Get all three in writing and most jobs go the way you expect.

  • A list of what the price includes.
  • The name of the person doing the work.
  • A start date and a finish date.

Before you compare prices, check that each quote lists the same work. A low price that leaves things out costs more by the end.

What gets struck

Two gaps cause trouble almost every time. The first is a price with no list of what it includes. The second is a start date with no end date. Either one, on its own, is enough to turn a simple job into a long argument.

If a quote you have is missing either one, ask for it before you sign. A good business will add it the same day.

Three more on the same shelf.

Page: Blog post

What you can build with it

A single article with header, image, body and author. A case study or news story template. A starting point to bind to the post's fields.

Props

A page: bind title, date, image and body to the post; edit the author box; wrap the three cards in a related-posts loop.

States shown

Every state comes from the components inside; see their pages.

How to change it

It is a whole page built from library patterns and components (Blog card, Section intro). Keep, reorder or remove sections in the structure panel, then edit each component's props. Colour, type, spacing and radius follow your Automatic.css settings, so a change to the site's palette or scale changes this too.

ACSS tokens used

Every token the included patterns use; see their pages.

ACSS requirements

ACSS 4 defaults. Every component the page uses comes with the paste. Header and footer come from your site's template, not from the page.

Tested with

Etch 1.6.7 and ACSS 4.0.1. Version 1.0.1.
